"My Edges" - A Body Empowerment Poem

"Curls and Curves" Image by my daughter, Amaranthia Sepia, and I. Read more about this piece on my "Art Ventures" page

"My Edges" is about redefining my boundaries, my self-worth, and finding self-love. An excerpt from my unpublished poetry book, BEING BLACK: being human. Previously published on therealus.com

I don’t ever again want to

Lose

My edges

My boundaries

To feel consumed by another

No longer do I want to

Fit

Like hand and glove

Perfectly so

Into someone’s life

With no identity

Of my own

No edges

In this, my new life

I want to be

In control

To be aware of any

Peculiarities

To quickly remove them

From my space

My corner

‘Cause I have no energy

To waste on

Degenerates and warped

Individuals

My life is too valuable

Too special

To allow emotional invalids

In and out like a

Revolving door

No

I’m no longer

Needy

No longer

Insecure

Dependent

Needing someone to tell me

I am

Beautiful

To make my mind up

For me

For I have found peace

A calm

In my life

—Self-acceptance

Now I am free to pursue

A healthier way of life

I have found my

Edges
