I believe you must bring yourself to the table if you want to thrive in today's crazy world, your personality, sense of humor, and, most importantly, your heart. All these elements inspired ClarityIsJustSoHip! back in 2016. Suddenly, out of the blue, I was told of my potential to contract a rare blood cancer. Since then, I have infused light, optimism, and hope into the designs and writings I create.
I create art to heal and to spread love and light via my IG page. On @ClarityIsJustSoHip! I posted over 800 pieces in the space of one year with this mission. These pieces are a symbol of my recovery and healing. My 'Sun Angels' began after an incredibly spiritual and healing experience while taking photos of New Hampshire’s blazing sun. These were taken on afternoon walks in my New Hampshire neighborhood as I recovered from my health crisis in late 2015 early 2016.
These pieces represent the days on the journey back to wholeness, clarity, love, and peace. I believe life is too short to waste dwelling on 'what-could-have-been' or the 'what-ifs.' Every day since my diagnosis, I wake up feeling brand new, ready to tackle whatever is thrown my way. Good or bad, I go with the flow. Whenever I can, I post my vibrant, eye-catching designs with inspiring quotes and personal, uplifting thoughts to brighten my day and help those struggling.
Each piece birthed through the darkest moments of my health crisis; these works share the story of my journey back to whole health and balance via digitally manipulated iPhone photos, inspirational/motivational quotes, and self-improvement writings. Each 'Sun Angel' is manipulated repeatedly and put through various apps. My 21-year-old daughter, Amaranthia Sepia edits the designs on Gimp.
As an immigrant, high school dropout, and domestic violence survivor, I followed a childhood dream from Caribbean island shores to self-actualize as an artist and college graduate. As an immigrant, I spent the early days living underground in New York City, where I completed my GED at age 32, eventually finding my way to the halls of higher education. In 1999, at age 36, I graduated from Mount Holyoke College as a Frances Perkins Scholar with a degree in Liberal Arts. As a result of my experience, I believe clarity is necessary and much needed during these difficult times. My overall vision is to use my clarifying journey to help provide a pathway for those searching for something similar.
I intend to continue creating works that transport viewers to a place of peace and clarity, even if for a moment. In the process, I hope to develop a movement by having people share their stories about why ClarityIsJustSoHip! to them!
ClarityIsJustSoHip! is the title of Claire’s Instagram page, where she spreads love and light through art, writing, and her Clarity Talks. ClarityIsJustSoHip! a work in progress compiles a collection of art and writing to inspire and motivate. It features daily, short, uplifting pieces to aid self-improvement and elevate one's daily life in the principles of clarity, awareness, presence, acceptance, and gratitude. Claire modeled this body of work after her favorite book titled Believing in Myself by Larsen and Hegarty.
The concept of ClarityIsJustSoHip! is based upon five principles of “Clarity, Awareness, Presence, Acceptance and Gratitude” Claire developed to clear out dysfunctions that caused her life to stagnate and devolve into crisis. After becoming seriously ill in 2015, she realized merely surviving was no longer an option. To live a healthy life, Claire knew it was imperative to resolve old resentments, dysfunctions, and traumas. However, she realized that letting go of old habits would leave a vacuum. To ceaselessly hunt for the light that will allow her to self-actualize, she developed these five easily practical steps to help her achieve happiness and well-being.
Through a daily consistent Buddhist practice of chanting and focused prayers, she gained clarity, awareness, presence, acceptance, and gratitude for her life and purpose. Once Claire achieved clarity, awareness of the truth about her life experience grew. As her knowledge about herself expanded, Claire became fully present, allowing her to live in the moment more frequently, which gave her control of her life. As time went on and she routinely applied these three basics, it became easier to accept and embrace her life. As a result, she finally understood that the power to change was not a farfetched concept: it was a choice she always had at her fingertips. With new understanding and the continual applications of these essentials to healthy living, it was easy to feel grateful for the opportunity to start a new life grounded in wholeness and optimism.
Due to this personal and clarifying journey, Claire believes women like her, who have experienced traumatic and chaotic pasts due to ongoing crises, can benefit from such an approach. Tailored to fit their circumstances, they can also create favorable conditions to self-actualize and achieve their dreams by applying those key five principles, “Clarity, Awareness, Presence, Acceptance, and Gratitude.”
